Wear to Where: Winter to Spring

Winter to Spring: What to Keep and How to Store

02.08.12

So, you splurged and purchased winter’s most coveted pieces and now you want more mileage out of them as spring approaches. Fair enough. It’s not impossible to keep wearing most of them with just a few simple tweak to the items you’ll pair them with. Find new inspirations for these four key pieces below.

1. Cable Knit Sweater:
Winter’s staple item kept you extra warm, cozy and not to mention, stylish by the fireplace and now it will double as the top layer to your Sunday brunch get-up.  Skip the jacket and wear this piece with jeans or a long skirt a la spring 2012 runways.  Belt it for a more finished and streamlined effect.

2. Leopard (anything):
Is still in, in a big way. Just peel off the layers.  Leopard booties no longer need tights.  While a leopard skirt can use a brightly colored tee and a chunky statement necklace. I love a thin leopard best or J Brand Skinny in muted animal tones.

3. Lace Top:
Worn under a blazer for most of the winter, it’s time to show some skin! Wear a flesh-tone bodysuit or tank underneath your lace and tuck it into a skinny jean, shorts or a flowy long or short skirt.  Don’t forget to pair it with sky-high wedges – spring’s hottest shoe.

4. The Military Boot:
They helped you’ll trudge through the harsh Orange County weather this winter and now they’ll make pretty little florals seem less dainty. Pair them with a favorite floral print dress and a jean jacket. Skip the tights and maybe throw on a chunky or bold colored sock instead.

...and if we’re talking spring trends, then we also have to talk about packing away our winter items we won't be using for the rest of the year.  (It’s also a good time to weed out the clothing you haven’t worn for longer than you care to admit, hint hint.  My general rule of thumb is if you haven’t worn it in two years, there’s a good chance you never will. BTW, if you need help determining whether something is a keeper or weeper, I can help!)

To avoid pesky critters from unnoticeable traces of food or dirt, clean all clothes before you store it.  Cleaning the storage containers or buying new cardboard boxes is a great added insurance policy.  When folding items into storage, it’s important to consider the item.  Fold all sweaters and knits for storage, as hanging will stretch their shape.  Stack folded items from the lightest items on top to the heaviest on bottom.  Heavy coats or jackets should be hung on wooden or padded hangers that will support their weight.

Always remember CLD: cool, light and dry.  Storing your clothing in a cool, even temperature, well-ventilated, dry area away from artificial or natural light will give you the best results.  If you want your clothes smelling extra fresh add  cedar chips which are a healthier (and more pleasant) alternative to mothballs.
